I owned an MSP for years before I understood what clients actually wanted. They didn't want 99.9% uptime. They didn't want the latest technology. They wanted to stop thinking about IT entirely. That realization changed everything.
I stopped leading with our technical capabilities and started asking better questions: What keeps you up at night? Where is technology slowing you down? What would success look like three years from now? Turns out, being great at technology is expected, not impressive.
What actually matters is understanding the business well enough to know which technology problems are worth solving. This shift took me from running a solid MSP to eventually serving as COO and now Fractional CIO for companies navigating complex transitions. Same technical skills, completely different impact.
The lesson: Technical expertise gets you in the room. Business acumen keeps you there.
