Digital transformation starts with your broken processes

"Digital transformation" is what consultants call it when you finally fix your broken processes. I've led transformation projects at companies ranging from manufacturing to professional services. Here's the pattern: Leadership wants to "modernize." IT proposes new systems. Everyone assumes technology will solve everything.

It doesn't work that way. Real transformation starts with admitting your current processes don't actually support what you're trying to do. Then, and only then, you figure out what technology would help.

Best transformation I ever led: We spent the first month just mapping how work actually flowed versus how leadership thought it flowed. The gap was massive. We ended up changing half the processes before we touched a single system. The new technology worked because it supported how people actually needed to work.

Stop looking for technology to transform your business. Start looking for processes worth transforming, then find technology that enables them.
