The $47,000 cloud bill: why discipline beats the cloud

The cloud bill that made a CFO cry: $47,000. For one month. For a machine learning dev environment someone forgot to turn off.

The cloud's greatest strength (infinite, on-demand resources) is also its greatest risk if you're not disciplined.

Here's what's actually driving cloud costs out of control: Dev and test environments running 24/7 when they're used maybe 8 hours a day. Overprovisioned instances because "we might need the capacity." Storage nobody's looked at in three years. And my personal favorite: Engineers spinning up resources for testing and forgetting they exist.

The companies winning at cloud aren't using fewer services, they're using them smarter. They tag everything. They automate shutdowns. They rightsize constantly. And they treat cloud spending like renting, not owning, because every hour you're not using something, you're still paying for it.

Three rules that have saved clients hundreds of thousands: Tag every resource with owner and purpose. Set up billing alerts at 50%, 75%, and 90% of budget. Automatically shut down non-production environments outside business hours.

The cloud doesn't make things cheaper. Discipline makes things cheaper. The cloud just makes the cost of poor discipline much more visible, and much more expensive.
