Insights · Working with a Fractional CIO

When is the right time to bring in a Fractional CIO?

"When's the right time to bring in a Fractional CIO?" Right before you realize you needed one six months ago.

Here's the pattern I see constantly: Companies hit $30M to $75M in revenue. IT is "handled" by a mix of the CFO making software decisions, an overwhelmed IT manager, and whoever spoke to the CEO last about technology.

Then something breaks. Not the servers, those are fine. What breaks is alignment. Marketing buys a CRM that doesn't integrate with anything. Finance wants to move to the cloud but doesn't know where to start. IT is drowning in requests and has no roadmap.

That's when I get the call. And we spend the first month just documenting what they actually have versus what they think they have. The gap is always massive.

The best time for fractional leadership? Before the chaos. During growth. Before acquisition. When you're planning major technology investments. When your IT "strategy" is actually just a collection of vendor relationships and good intentions.

You don't need someone full-time to attend every standup and status meeting. You need someone who's seen this movie before, who can look at your business trajectory and make sure your technology decisions support where you're going, not just where you are.

10-15 hours a month of the right strategic guidance beats 160 hours of someone figuring it out as they go.
